Friday Family History/Happy Birthday William Cabell 9? March 1699

William Cabell was born in Warminister England in March of 1699 to Nicholas and Rachel Hopper Cabell. William was a prominent man in the colony of Virginia to say the very least. William was surveyor, magistrate, farmer, trader, vestryman, churchwarden, and pioneer.

I’ll not go into full detail here, but I will send you  to visit the  Cabell Family Papers, Small Library, University of Va site.  I also need to go back and collect information as well, because I only had dates for William and his parents and nothing else. It was a wonderful find when I plugged in William Cabell Genealogy in google today and got the above site. Other VA  family members could be listed there. After doing some reading, I am sorry I didn’t understand this when my daughter and I visited Jamestown. Maybe another trip is needed!

I will tell you how William fits into my family. His wife Elizabeth Burks (1706-1756) is the sister to Richard Burks who married Frances “Fannie” Horsley. Richard is my husbands 6th and 7th great-grandfather. Looking through just a bit of the genealogy and historical information it seems these three families were fairly close in proximity and in friendship.
Jim’s most direct line of descent from Richard is as follows.

1-Richard Burks b. 1713
+Frances “Fannie” Horsley m. 1739
–2-Rowland Horsley Burks b. Between 1740 and 1745

HAPPY BIRTHDAY 6th GREAT GRAND UNCLE WILLIAM~~

Friday Family History on Sept 30/William and Anna Hogston Lewis married 172 yrs ago today

Anna Hogston is my Husband’s 3 great grand-aunt.

Anna Hogston, married William Lewis on 30 Sept 1839 in Washington City, Smyth Co., Va.

Anna is the daughter of John and Prudence Hogston of Smyth Co. Va. Her brother John and Susan Taylor Hogston are  Jim’s 3 great-grandparents.

Each time I do this historical day, I find so much more information that needs be to gathered. I don’t know how people can have “done” family trees! Maybe they are just more persistent than I am.

On a side note it is also my Brother-in-laws 54 Birthday and he shared this day with his Aunt Neola G. Burke, she was born on 30 Sep 1920 in Hartley, Pike Co., Ky the daughter of Joseph and Eliza Jane Elswick Burke.

Happy Hunting!

Henry and Susan Sophia Wade Bobo

Henry BOBO above and his wife, Susan Sophia WADE.There is much lore associated with Henry BOBO

There is much lore associated with Henry BOBO and his wife, Susan Sophia WADE. The known facts are that Henry was born 26 Nov. 1821 in Athens County, OH, and drowned on 20 April 1887 in Vinton County, OH, which had been a part of Athens County.

Henry was a farmer, a woodsman who gathered herbs for medicines and, apparently a drinker hard liquor.

He had ridden his horse into the town of Zaleski and had imbibed at a tavern before starting home, as he tried to cross Raccoon Creek which was out of banks because of heavy rain, he fell from the horse and was drowned.

They dragged the creek for a few days before finding his body.
One of his granddaughters opinion was that he was so stubborn that he would have floated upstream, and that is where his body was found, lodged under a tree.

We know little about his wife, Susan Sophia WADE:
b. 10 July 1823; d. 13 Jan. 1889; m. 9 Aug. 1843.

We know that she raised a family and was a school teacher, but we have not been able to discover any additional information on her.
We know more about Henry, who was a son of Israel BOBO, who migrated from Virginia to Ohio in the late 1700s or 1800.

Israel was a farmer and hunter. According to the records of the Hocking Valley, Israel and a fellow hunter killed 62 bears one year, cured the hides and took them to a trading post on the Ohio River. The traded the skins for a barrel of whiskey and dragged it behind a horse back to McArthur, Ohio, were it was said to be the first “imported” whiskey brought into town. One of Israel’s children said, “He would have never made it back with a full barrel.”

The BOBO family (BAUBEAU, BEAUBEAU and various spellings) were Huguenots who escaped from France, probably to England and the original immigrant ancestor, Gabriel BAUBEAU, came to Virginia in 1700.
