Letter of Attorney/ Isaiah McCartney to James Wilson Esq. 1814

While searching for a connection between Isaiah McCartney and whom we believe to be his parents John and Margaret Clyde McCartney, I found a document that proves Isaiah’s connection to his wife Lettice/Lettis/Leticia Hudders.

I  found at  the Chester County Pennsylvania website a Letter of Attorney. I ordered a copy for 5.00 and what I recieved was a Letter of Attorney drawn up for Isaiah McCartney and Lettis Hudders now McCartney his wife. This was written up to give their good friend James Wilson Esq. permission to handle this affair.

Lettice was to have recieved half of a property that her grandfather James Hudders Senr left to her in a will. The other half to her sister Mary. The stipulation of the will was that their father James Hudders Jr. would have use of the land through his natural life. I am not sure why the girls recieved this and not their father, but I am sure there must be a story in there somewhere.  James Jr. was not the only child, and usually grandchildren, especially girls,  didn’t get much mention in wills in that time period.

I now have proof of their marriage, somewhere between 1795 when James Hudders passed and his will proven and 1814 when this document was written. I have a birth date for whom I believe to be the oldest child of 1805 so that narrows it down a bit more.

My new question now is, why is she selling off her portion. I also have a letter of attorney for her sister Mary, wishing to sell her portion as well, during the same time period.
James Jr I believe  died after this document was drawn up, perhaps in the 1820’s.

I find it rather funny (odd) that I ordered this document in August, somewhere near the bi-centenial of it writing. Guess it was meant for me to find it then.

Surname Saturday/A Wee bit o’ Irish on St. Patrick’s Day

Long ago and far away. Lived a young man named Michael and himself  born in Northern Ireland about 1710.

When himself ventured to this country fair and left the Isle of Green it is not sure, but we find Michael and his clan in Allentown (Craig’s Settlement) PA as early as 1747. On Find A Grave we find himself buried at the Presbyterian Cemetery Northampton, Northampton County Pennsylvania, USA. Michael and Bridget are both buried in that cemetery.

Himself is found in THE HISTORY OF BUCKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, CHAPTER XXXVII, SMITHFIELD; Allen; MOUNT BETHEL; MOORE; EASTON; 1746 TO 1750from the discovery of the Delaware to the present time by W. W. H. Davis, A.M., 1876 and 1905* editions

The Scotch-Irish settlers in Allen moved in favor of forming the  township in 1746. Jonathan [John*] McCartney, Michael Clide and many others including the Craig’s are listed as signers to prove this settlement. John and Michael  I believe are two of my grandfathers.  I am descended from Michael twice.  Himself and Bridget are my 6th great grandparents. My fourth grandparents are if everything is correct,  first cousins.

Friday Family History/ Enos McCartney (182yrs) 14 Oct 1829

Enos McCartney is the son of my fourth great-grandparents Isaiah and Lettice Hudders McCartney. Enos is the second youngest of twelve children. I believe he was born in Holmes CO., Ohio. His birthdate is 14 October 1829.

I received from the Holmes Co. Library a copy of a Common Pleas case that was between his brother Samuel (administrator of his father’s will) and his mother Lettice,it contains 11 of the 12 children of which he is one (stated that he was a minor) in the summons and proceedings. If I read the case right, there was outstanding debit that had to be paid so they needed to sell part of the farm land, and Lettice was petitioning for Dower rights. The proceeding occurred between 1850 and 1851. In the end I believe they sold about 10 acres. I am wondering what legal age was in the 1850’. If Enos was born in 1829 he would have been around 21. Yet he was listed as a minor in one of the documents.
