Happy Thanksgiving!

There  has been much conversation about when and why our ancestors came to this county. Some insist that many of  them came for the land for the possible wealth of this country.  This may very well be correct. As we all know there are those that came to this country for religious freedom. Some of these had to learn tolerance and others that gave it freely. There was a smaller group yet, that arrived on these shores as punishment, who in time gained their freedom.

What strikes me about both groups they came here for FREEDOM, whether it was freedom to better their life with good land and hard work or the FREEDOM to worship as they pleased  and in many cases for both freedoms.

I give thanks for these ancestors, for whatever reason that the embarked on a long hard voyage across a  large and not always peaceful body of water, to seek their freedom so that their descendants would also enjoy such freedoms.

My fondest prayer, is that we open up our eyes and see that our freedoms are being slowly taken away in the name of progress. In the hopes that government will cure-all our ills. I truly don’t believe this is good for our country.

If my people which are called  by my name , shall humble themselves, and pray , and seek my face, and turn from their wicked  ways ; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2Chronicles 7:14

This passage from The Holy Bible is talking to the believer. We should humble ourselves, pray, seek his face and above all turn from our wicked ways? You say wicked ways??? Why would a Christian be or do wicked things? Have they not professed a love and fellowship with God? Yes we have, but in saying that we are yet human. Capable of doing things that please ourselves and not God. I think many reasons that people are seeking for the Government to take care of things to help the poor and all the other ills of our society is that the Church has neglected The Great Commandment To Love God and  to  love thy neighbor. I am thankful I belong to a church that has not forgotten and strives daily to improve on our selves in God’s light and not in our own light. I call believers to remember God’s command to love they neighbor and how are we to love or neighbors… MORE than ourselves. Instead of being self-serving be a servant to others.

Bless yourself by Blessing others! Happy Thanksgiving to each and everyone!

The Cycle of Thanksgiving

In The Solitude of the Day

Walking along the still quiet streets, in the middle of the day.
With only my dog by my side I began to wonder what the fall of 1918 in France was like. Did the men ever get a chance just to sit and listen to the rustling of the leaves to feel the breeze upon their faces. I look upon my mind’s eye and I see flaming colors that are the hedge rows, the yellows, oranges and brilliant reds. Natures beauty must have abounded even in the carnage of war. Young lovers walking hand in hand enjoying  solitude perhaps for a few moments. Fall is like that, she wraps you in her colors, teases your nose with the scents of fallen leave and the passing summer and the approaching winter, sometime soft and mellow like the fallen leaves, often times the warmth of summer and thrown in ,at will, the chill of winter that will soon come to stay.

As I returned to this time, and I approached my drive, I looked at my watch and I have been gone an hour, how time seems to stand still in the solitude of the day.

Lacking Locks for Love

It once again is breast cancer awareness month. Which tends to remind me of a trip I took with my daughter and her friend to our local Fantastic Sams  so that we could donate our hair to Locks of Love.  These young women went far beyond what I did (call me chicken) I did donate a considerable amount of hair, which was waist long, shortened to my shoulders. I just couldn’t bring myself to do the extra 10 inches or so.

There is a subject that  I would like to clarify. I have heard many people say that they no longer give to Locks of Love, because they charge the children for the hair pieces. That in part is true, but the original hair piece can run from $3,000 to $5,000 dollars depending on the need.  Locks of Love give according to need.

Locks of Love Mission Statement

Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.

If you have the hair to donate and then I urge you to do so. I would suggest you look into Locks of Love or other ways of donating your hair.  There are a few others that I found with a quick search of the web:

Julie’s Place

Julie’s Place…

Is not of this world
Its above the clouds
In the realm of Angels
In a Mansion of my own.

Julie’s Place…
Is anchored on the firm foundation
Is resting in the Great I AM
Is a Child of the King
Daughter of the Alpha and Omega.

Julies’ Place…
Is to be a fisher of men
A singer of praises
A teacher to the young
A light in the darkness.

But above all Julie’s Place
is to believe on the only begotten
Son of God!
And to walk in his will
and to rest in his peace.

“Everything is on Ancestry” or is it?

I am the new kid on the block when it comes to the blogging world and I am trying to figure out this new tool. Having said that I am not new to the genealogy world, which doesn’t mean I know everything and I don’t expect to every know everything!

I spent 10 yrs hosting and chatting with other genealogists in the Golden Gates Genealogy Forum on AOL. I hosted in General Chat and in the Beginners Chat. When Ancestry first hit the bandwidths there was so much excitement! Prior to that time there was a lot of information  found in such places as Rootsweb, USGenweb and personal home pages of folks doing and posting their genealogy work. Yet one still had to work hard at even researching on the internet to find much of anything. It’s amazing how much there is now compared to then, but I digress. When Ancestry opened its doors, we had to battle with those who would send beginners to Ancestry and tell them that they would find their whole tree there! YIKES! I was even told before getting my computer and internet … the Internet had all of my family! NOT!

A colleague of mine that hosted with me, came across this yet again just the other day while she was hosting another chat, a new person came in asking how to start their genealogy and another person piped in, get an account with Ancestry and you will find your whole family! Now granted Ancestry has a prolific amount of information, it still does not have all of your family and to tell you the truth neither does the internet.

There will still be ancestors the either refuse being found or that you will have to do your work the old-fashioned way and visit cemeteries, libraries, court houses etc.
I suspect I may never prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that John McCartney was  the father of Isaiah (Isaih) McCartney, I do know that I am most likely going to have to take a trip to Columbia  Co. PA and area to get them attached or dispatched 😀
The folks that are collaborating to find out who Robert Jackson’s ancestors where may never find that out either. There are just somethings that have not passed the test of time and are lost and will not be  found, no matter how abundant the information is on the internet.

So to the beginners out there, Ancestry and all the other resources out there are wonderful and have tons of information, your family will not all be found by following the little green leaves and it will all not be found on the internet. One more bit of information, if you find your family online especially in sites that host sharing trees, or on personal websites make sure you document and research for yourself. There is still a lot of miss information out there and wrong connections. One still needs to do their home work.

For those of you seasoned genealogist, don’t just send the newbies packing for Ancesty please honestly answer their question and find out what they mean by how do I begin? Show them the ropes befriend them and guide them along. I believe doing this will set the beginner in right stead to understand what they are really facing.

My hats off to all those out there that do strive to make a difference in the world of genealogy.

Happy Hunting!
