John Bertram "Bert" Rhyne was born Dec. 5, 1923, in Smyrna, Ga., to S. Kennard and Eunice Howell Rhyne. He died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, in Greensboro, N.C.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in France, and a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology. Bert formerly was a resident of Jacksonville, Fla., and Panama City, Fla., where he worked as a chemical engineer in the papermaking industry.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 49 years, Edith Vickers MacLaren Rhyne; his brothers, Bill Rhyne, Bob Rhyne and S. K. "Buster" Rhyne Jr.; and a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Beverly Arthur LeDonne and Mark LeDonne. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, of Greensboro; a son, Don MacLaren and his wife, Nancy, of Marianna, Fla.; and daughters, Dottie Arthur and husband, Malcolm, of Panama City, Fla., and Kay Cowherd and husband, Dean, of Arnold, Md. He also is survived by grandchildren, Dharma Arthur, Ali Ham, Leslie Sawyer, Lilith Arthur, Malcolm "Bo" Arthur, Virginia Cowherd and Jonathan Cowherd; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also remebered by his step-daughter, Theresa (Ryan) Collins, Dublin, Ohio and step-son David Shiretta, Grove City, Ohio.[added by webmaster per request of Rebecca Rhyne]
He is remembered by his in-laws, Mabel Rhyne, Tony and Mich Picciano, Ginger Vickers, Jo Ellen and Bob Mitchell, Margaret and Guy Jencks, John and Dot Vickers, Shirley and Bob Snead and Sarah Rhyne; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, who will remember him for the years he dedicated to family history research so that we all can know more about our ancestors.
Bert was a member of Friendly Hills Presbyterian Church (PCA) in North Carolina, Sons of Confederate Veterans, The Rhyne Family Association and the Family Tree House group. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Friendly Hills Church, 1450 Guilford College Road, Jamestown, N.C., with services following at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be private at Midway Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Deacon's Fund at Friendly Hills Church, Jamestown, N.C., or the Gideons.
